Biodegradable shampoo for the eco-friendly consumer

If you haven’t already read the Tuesday’s article on Top 5 Eco Friendly Summer Events , be sure to do so. It is about eco-friendly summer events taking place this summer and fall.  Green events are both fun and informative.  Many offer live music while educating people on the importance of living a greener lifestyle.  A lot of the eco-friendly events encourage the attendees to be as earth conscious as possible.  Rothbury, for example, highly recommends bringing biodegradable soap for showering.  Biodegradable soap is both good for the environment and good for you!  Here is a product that I found in preparation for my attendance at Rothbury that I would like to share with all of you.  I don’t have dreadlocks but this shampoo is good for all hairstyles.  I found this product and immediately considered purchasing it to have a more eco-friendly shampoo to bring to the event that encourages sustainability.

This all-natural shampoo is great because it keeps hair clean while still maintaining your desired look.  It is made from organic hemp seed oil which leaves the scalp hydrated and capable of growing a healthier head of locks.  It uses the natural oils from tea tree, rosemary and peppermint making your hair look and smell great.  Since this shampoo is made from all natural ingredients there will be no build-up left in the hair.  This organic shampoo is great for people with or without dreadlocks. Really it is just a great all-natural shampoo for anyone to use.  This organic hemp shampoo is 100% biodegradable so you can look good while still being eco-friendly.

Would you bring this all-natural shampoo to your next eco-friendly event? Is biodegradable soap important for eco-friendly consumers?

Top 5 Eco-friendly Summer Events

So you’ve decided to live a more eco-friendly life…now what?  The best thing to do after becoming hip on eco-friendly living, especially during the summer, is to attend eco-friendly events.  These events can range from music festivals, to forums that discuss sustainability to simply a gathering of people that understand the necessity of eco-friendly living.  Here are the top 5 eco-friendly summer events.

1) Green Festivals: Greenfestival is a joint project of Global Exchange and Green America that organizes events that bring together individuals to discuss ways to make our lives socially, economically and environmentally healthier.  The next Green Festivals take place in Washington DC, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver and Chicago.  At this event authors, educators, and other earth friendly individuals have the opportunity to shop, taste organic beer and wine, and discuss renewable energy and green technology.  Green Festivals are a great way to show your interest in sustainability and meet some very interesting people that are making headway in environmental issues. Check out http://www.greenfestivals.org/ to learn more about these awesome events.

2) Rothbury: Rothbury is a 4-day music festival that takes place in Rothbury, Michigan.  Rothbury is not only a music festival but also an event committed to sustainability.  Rothbury aims to have very little impact on the environment while entertaining the tens of thousands that come out to enjoy the music of major headliners and local artist.  At their inaugural festival in 2008, Rothbury stayed true to their commitment to having an eco-friendly festival by providing plates made of sugarcane and cups made of corn. There is also an area where people can gather around and talk about important topics such as green jobs and its importance in today’s society.  If you’re a music and eco-friendly junkie check out their site for more information,  http://www.rothburyfestival.com/

3) 10,000 Lakes Festival: This festival is also a 4-day music festival and takes place in Detroit Lakes, MN.  10,000 Lakes Festival makes it easy for concertgoers to recycle by providing them with two plastic bags, one for garbage and one for recyclable materials.  They have what they call 24-hour Greening Stations which are stations set up throughout the venue to assist attendees to recycle their materials.  During their 2008 festival they were able to collect over 50 tons of recycling resulting in a very earth friendly event.  Check out their website for more information, http://www.10klf.com/index.php

4) Think Green World Music Festival: Located in Napa Valley this event is about bringing together those that care about the environment and the kind of planet we will be leaving for future generations.  During this festival attendees can enjoy green businesses, workshops on sustainable living and interactive activities for kids.  Although this festival has been postponed for 2009, it will be up and running in 2010.  Be sure to check it out next year’s event and all they have to offer. http://www.thinkgreen-worldmusicfestival.com/

5) Coachella: Coachella is another music festival that is about the music and about the earth.  Coachella music festival, which is located in Indio, CA, combines music and recycling to make a very exciting eco-friendly event.  Their biggest goal is to get people to recycle their used plastic water bottles.  In order to achieve this goal they teamed up with Global Inheritance and created a program called Ten for One.  Here concertgoers are able to return ten empty water bottles for one free bottle of water.  Stay hydrated and stay eco-friendly! Coachella music festival has already taken place for 2009 but 2010 will be just as successful.  Click here to get more information on this eco-friendly music festival, http://www.coachella.com/

Does your product have the Juice? The Juice is the stuff that makes your product worth talking about. It’s the stuff about a product that makes people feel like they gotta have it. The Juice is the stuff about your iPhone or G1 that keeps your focus on it and away from your significant other. The Juice is that comforting sound from your favorite band that makes you play their songs over and over again. It’s the stuff in Greenies dog treats that makes my dog Bamboo jump three feet off the ground with excitement. More or less, it’s what makes a product sweet.

So what’s in the Guffly Juice? Two main ingredients:

1.) Style
There are a lot of typical and lame products out there flooding the marketplace. If we’re not careful these grotesque beings will take over, like how parasites invade a host and feed on it for as long as it is allowed. We call these Funuggled beings the Anti-Guff here at Guffly, and we’re ready to defend ourselves and our followers against its wrath. That’s why we’ll never feature a product that we wouldn’t use ourselves. Part of why we’re doing this is to get unique and attractive products for ourselves and our pets. If we, our followers, and all of our pets feel like a product represents the Anti-Guff, then it will never find its way onto Guffly.com.

2.) Goodness
The products we choose to feature on Guffly.com have a less negative effect on the environment, people, and animals. We love men and womens products that are Fair Trade, Recycled, Reusable, Biodegradable, Organic, Sustainable, Energy Saving, and Natural. You can be sure that any product that you’ll see on Guffly.com will fall into any of these categories. We’re all about Personal Accessories, Home Accessories, Gadgets, Office Accessories, and of course Pet accessories. And, you can trust that all of the products that we choose to feature on Guffly.com will be researched using the Federal Trade Commission’s environmental guides, as well as the standards set forth by the Fair Trade Foundation to be sure that all environmental and fair trade claims are legitimate.

So do you have a Guffly Product? There’s only one way to find out. Contact Jordan at suppliers@guffly.com to get your products into the product selection process. That’s it! We’re super excited to get your products into ours and our followers’ hands.

5 Ideas to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle in the Real World

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle!

Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.  Many are familiar with what this catchy little phrase means but how many people are actually incorporating this mantra into their lives?  As times change people are always on the go or not truly thinking about their actions when it comes to sustaining our planet.  There is a big movement in purchasing eco-friendly and organic products but there are some other things to do to show just how eco-friendly you truly are.  Here are 5 ways to Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle and to contribute to the overall health of our planet.

#1 Turn off the faucet:
This has been a message since our childhood but not many people follow this simple rule.  In order to save water turn the faucet off when brushing your teeth or washing your face.  There really is no need for the water to be running and if we all turned off the faucet we each could save over a thousand gallons of water.

#2 Reuse plastic sandwich bags:
This is something not many people think about but if done can save a lot of money and reduce the amount of plastic bags pilling up in landfills.  Think about it, why throw away a perfectly good sandwich bag when it could be used again.  If it gets a bit messy inside it can simply be rinsed out with water, but not too much water!

#3 Aluminum water bottles vs. plastic water bottles: If you have not already noticed, many people are sporting the new water bottle around town.  Instead of the old plastic water bottles people are now really digging the aluminum bottles.  Why you ask.  Well not only are they attractive and convenient, they are also eco-friendly.  Having just one aluminum water bottle significantly reduces the amount of plastic water bottles an individual purchases annually.  These aluminum water bottles come in many different styles and there are even some made just for kids.  If you don’t have your own aluminum water bottle be sure to purchase one soon!

#4 Unplug unused appliances: Not many people think to do this on a regular basis but take a look, is your cell phone charger still plugged in even though your phone isn’t being charged?  Most likely it is!  This is one thing that people don’t think to do even though it still uses so much energy just being plugged into the wall.  So, if you aren’t using your cell phone charger, your toaster, blender, hair appliance, or even your TV unplug it!

#5 Change your light bulb: Many people are still using traditional light bulbs to light their homes and offices but there are better ones out there.  Compact fluorescent light bulbs or energy efficient light bulbs are the new buzz.  The reason behind this is because of how much less energy is used when using these light bulbs.  Not only do they use less energy they also last longer than traditional light bulbs.  They are generally more expensive than traditional ones but can you really put a price on saving your earth?

These are five simple ways we can actually Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle in our fast pace world.  It doesn’t take much effort to make these simple changes and with these changes we can improve our health and the health of our earth.  Being eco-friendly has never been so easy!

Voice Your Vote: Recycling made easy with this storage unit for your recyclables.

Bed Bath & Beyond at ShopStyle

In home recycle bin for eco-friendly consumers.

If you haven’t already read the article regarding recycling that was posted yesterday make sure to do so. http://blog.guffly.com/2009/06/the-real-deal-on-being-eco-friendly-through-recycling/ There is a lot of good information in there to help people understand the ins-and-outs of recycling.   It can be confusing with all the information out there but with a simple guide it makes recycling a lot easier.  After talking to some people about recycling, one of the reasons that people tend not to recycle as much as they should is because of the inconvenience.  Some people don’t have curbside recycling pick-up which means that some have to take their recyclables to a recycling center.  The above product accommodates for those inconveniences.

This in home recycling unit can store up to 10 gallons for plastic, glass and metal storage and 5 gallons for paper materials.  This recycling center makes recycling a lot easier and eco chic.  It comes in a black which makes it a perfect fit for any kitchen.  The all-in-one recycling bin offers eco-friendly consumers to organize their recyclables for one easy trip to the recycling center.  This product leaves no room for excuses!

The Real Deal on being Eco-friendly through Recycling

Recycling is eco stylish!

Recycling is eco stylish!

There is no better time than now to jump on the recycling bandwagon.  With global warming becoming a serious threat to our planet, it is important that we all contribute to the sustainability of our earth.  Recycling can be a bit confusing at first but after doing some research, it is easy to make such a big difference. According to various sources, statistically the United States recycles just about 28% of its waste today, which is doubled from what it was a decade ago. If we all have this information, we all can make a huge difference.  Take a minute to read this article and test your eco-friendly knowledge, maybe you will learn something you did not know!

What is recycling?
Recycling is taking old materials and processing them to make new products.  Doing this reduces the waste of potentially useful products and reduces water and air pollution.  Before recyclable materials are recycled, they need to be separated into the type of material they are made of and whether or not they can be recycled.

What can be recycled?
The basic materials that can be recycled include paper products, plastics, metals and glass.  These products can be broken down and processed to make new products.   Therefore, paper can be recycled to produce recycled paper or plastic containers can be processed to become Frisbees!

How do I know if it can be recycled?
There is an international symbol that lets people know if the materials/products they have can be recycled. Most people are familiar with the triangle of arrows symbol. This symbol denotes that the product can be recycled.  This makes it easier for consumers to recycle their old products. Some products do provide additional information. Virtually everything made of plastic should be marked with a recycling code. Not all types can actually be recycled. Types 1 and 2 are widely accepted in container form, and type 4 is sometimes accepted in bag form. Glass, steel (or “tin”) and aluminum are easy to recognize and recycle. Most types of paper can be recycled from office paper to phonebooks, and corrugated cardboard to waxed cartons.

What materials cannot be recycled?
There are materials that cannot be recycled and it is important that every earth conscious person is aware of them.  Most obvious is food.  Food scraps like banana peels or apple cores are not recyclable.  Other non-recyclable materials that are perhaps not as obvious are Styrofoam and ceramic kitchenware. Some items, like batteries, motor oil, computer parts and tires, are only recyclable at special locations.

Recycling Facts

  • It takes 80-100 years for an aluminum can to decompose (break down) in a landfill.
  • Glass takes over 1,000,000 (one million) years to decompose in a landfill.
  • It can take up to 700 years for plastic to decompose (break down) in a landfill.

Recycling is a great way to contribute to the overall health of our planet. When you think about how it can take 80 to 100 years for aluminum cans to decompose, over 1,000,000 years for glass and up to 700 years for plastic - recycling just makes sense.   Having information like this is important so earth conscious people can do their part in making our planet as healthy as possible. Make sure to check whether or not your city or town has recycling pick-up and if they do not be sure to find the nearest recycling center.

Voice Your Vote: Eco-friendly yoga mat to satisfy your need for sustainable shopping

Athleta at ShopStyle

Perfect your favorite yoga poses on this eco-friendly yoga mat.

I recently learned about the history of yoga and it made me really interested in incorporating yoga into my daily life.  I have done yoga before but knowing the history and meanings of the different positions really makes doing yoga even more enjoyable.  If you aren’t familiar the word yoga means uniting or joining (fun fact of the day!).  Now that I am finally serious about yoga I decided to get my own mat that I can take with me to yoga classes or use on my own.

I found an eco-friendly yoga mat that is made without any hazardous materials.  Yoga is good for your body so it should be good for the environment as well so it certainly doesn’t have any trace of mercury.  The mat is water resistant and textured to improve the quality of your yoga positions.  Do something good for yourself while doing something good for the environment! Namaste.

What does that fair trade sticker really mean?

FLO sets international Fairtrade standards and support Fairtrade producers.

FLO sets international Fairtrade standards and support Fairtrade producers.

As many people have already noticed, there has been an increase in how many products are labeled with the fair trade logo, but what does that sticker really mean and how do products obtain one?  To begin, the Fairtrade Labeling Organization (FLO) defines fair trade as an alternative approach to traditional trading between producers and consumers.  More or less fair trade is a social movement that promotes sustainability.  Through fair trade producers are offered better deals and in turn are able to improve the quality of their lives and plan for their future needs.  When trades are done fairly both parties benefit.  Consumers are able to buy products that match their values and ethics and also contribute to the depletion of poverty.  Not only are producers and consumers benefiting from fair trade but there are also some environmental benefits to fair trade.  FLO encourages producers to use farming and production practices that are environmentally sustainable.

The FLO uses a set of standards that are used in order to ensure that producers are receiving prices that cover their cost of sustainable production and promote projects that augment social, economic and environmental development.  These standards are used when producers are producing such things as coffee, bananas, rice and other such natural resources.  However, fair trade doesn’t stop at natural resources.  According to FLO fair trade is even used with products such as sporting equipment because many workers who produce these products are working long hours for below legal minimum wage.  With fair trade implemented these workers are able to provide for themselves on a more sustainable basis.  Take a look at this video from the FLO website and see how fair trade is improving the lives of producers: http://www.fairtrade.net/films.html.

Fair trade is about the improvement of people’s lives.  With fair trade everyone is able to be a more conscientious producer and consumer and in turn contribute to environmental sustainability making for a more eco-friendly world.

5 Ideas for Eco friendly Summer Fun

Dogs like eco friendly summer fun too!

Dogs like eco friendly summer fun too!

Summertime can be one of the easiest times of year to introduce some eco-friendly living to your life.  We all understand that it may be difficult to start on the path of eco-friendly living but with these 5 simple activities you can turn your summer into an eco-friendly summer.

#1 Ride a bike: The first way to make your summer more earth friendly is to ride your bike more often.  This is good way to cut down on pollution and a great way to stay looking great.  Riding your bike may not be ideal all-day-everyday but when popping over to a friends house or making a quick run to the market why not hop on that bike that has been collecting dust.  If you’re your new to town or want to join a new club, check out bicycling clubs in your area. It’s a great way to meet new people and explore town!

#2 Go Camping: Camping is a cheap and eco-friendly activity that is great for all ages.  It allows you to enjoy nature and spend quality time with friends and family.  It can be as rugged or as modern as you like but if you want to be really ecofriendly go for the rugged camping site.  These will have little to no electricity and will truly test your survival skills.  While camping, be sure to go on a hike, swim or just sit around the camp fire sharing scary stories.

#3 Attend Green Drinks: Green Drinks is an informal opportunity to meet up monthly with others interested in talking green.  It’s a networking event designed around the theme of sustainability, health and well-being for self and the environment.  This event is international with meeting places from Detroit to Vietnam.  Take part of this green event find a Green Drinks near you… http://www.greendrinks.org/index.php?country=USA&city=USA

#4 Plant an organic garden: Eating organic is easy when it’s in your own backyard.  If you are interested in planting a vegetable or fruit garden head over to your local food co-op or farmers market and start planting your own food.  This is a great way to cut down on all those unmentionable chemicals in our fruits and vegetables we see today.  It is also a great way to get the whole family involved. If you have kids or know little kids have them help you, it’s an activity they will be sure to enjoy.

#5 Garage Sale: Either go to or have a garage sale.  If you are having a garage sale this is a great way to get rid of all your old clothes or clear the clutter from unused household items.  With a garage sale you can make room for your more eco friendly products and home accessories while making money.  If you are interested in attending a garage sale check out your local newspaper or just ride your bike around town until you find one.  You can score some pretty useful items ones that may even be more eco-friendly than you were expecting!
