How much does the environment factor in on your voting decisions this time around? With oil, the environment, and global warming on people’s minds, each presidential candidate’s policy on energy and the environment has become pretty important in this race. If you’re an undecided voter, or unsure of what your candidate has prepared, comparing energy policies of Obama and McCain is a good place to start. Check out their plans:

Recycled Desktop Business Card Holders = A Fun Desk Accessory to Liven Up Any Cube
My desk at our temporary office for Guffly just got a lot cooler. Jordan and I found these unique business card holders made of recycled bike chains and sprockets and it was an immediate must-have. Resource Revival, the company that makes them, also has bowls, keychains, clocks, and other goods made from the parts of old bikes. They make great recycled gifts for green folks, bicyclists, people with business cards, and those with a general sense of style.

I heard about Good Guide yesterday and I knew this was something I wanted to pass along. Good Guide is an internet database of thousands of every day household products – including baby hygiene, medicine, skin care, hair care, men’s grooming, and the list goes on. They rate these thousands of products by environmental impact, social impact, and health impact. For example, if you’re unsure of what is in your favorite body wash you can look it up on Good Guide and find out what is going on behind the label. You’ll find out if there are any ingredients that are unsafe for your long or short term health, if any ingredients are banned in other countries, have any scientific relation to causing cancer, or are otherwise harmful to your health. You can also find out they company’s stance on labor and human rights issues, its philanthropic practices, and customer service rating. You can also find out about the environmental impacts of the product and its packaging, including climate change, energy efficiency, and water usage.
Beyond all of the glorious data they provide, the Good Guide allows you to add products to a shopping list so that you can easily remember the facts when you’re staring at the abyss of products at the local grocery store.
This guide stopped me in my tracks. It’s unlike any other database of green products that I have seen thus far. Maybe this is because they focus on daily household products, the things we either tend to overlook or are most confused about. Personally, I’ve wasted an uncountable number of minutes staring at the backs of deodorant tubes, wondering what the heck I’m buying. I’m pretty excited to finally understand. I see better buying decisions in my future.

Wondering Where to Meet Green People (as in, beyond the computer screen)?
I love an excuse to grab a beer and meet cool folks. So, I’m looking forward to going to Green Drinks later this month. Green Drinks is an informal monthly meet up session for green people in cities all around the world. I have yet to go to one, but they say it’s a great way to meet new business contacts, make new friends, find employment, and experience overall happiness.
There is not a Detroit location for Green Drinks though! So we might just have to set up a
Guffly one. Until then, I’ll be visiting the Green Drinks in Ann Arbor. It’s at Leopold Brothers every 3rd Wednesday of the month, start at 7:30pm.
