A warm welcome to the Daily Guff goes out to the Ladies ConFURtable Gloves that comes to us from the fine people at Hemp HoodLamb.

They make clothing according to their own Industrial Organic design philosophy – With new designs, styles and collaborations we try to reinvent eco-fashion and attribute to the movement reversing the negative impacts of the fashion industry on our environment.

A word on hemp from Hemp HoodLamb:

hemp hoodlambHemp is the strongest natural fiber on the planet. This quality makes hemp fabric perfect for an outer shell that has to withstand the elements each and every day of winter.

Hemp has been used for centuries by mankind for thousands of different purposes, ranging from ropes to medicine and from canvas to clothing. Add to this the fact that  hemp can be grown very environmentally friendly and it is not more than logic that more and more people all over the world are starting to realize that hemp works!

With the chill of winter really making itself at home in Detroit these days we think these super functional gloves are an awesome winter accessory. Learn more about this product and buy it on the Daily Guff: http://guffly.com

Recycled Folding Speakers: About the Guff

OrigAudioThese rockin – pun kinda intended – Recycled Folding Speakers come from OrigAudio. They are busy producing Mother Nature Approved speakers that are made from recycled materials and are completely self powered! Hello, who doesn’t need a pair of these in their life.

Think about it – on a bike ride, at the beach, just chilling at home, while working…whatever the occasion, having some easy to travel with speakers to add a soundtrack to your life is a beautiful thing.

Another beautiful thing about OrigAudio is that they support Music National Service, which is a nonprofit enterprise that supports and expands the use of music to address important civic and social needs. Research shows music to be an effective intervention in: 1) under-resourced public schools and low-income communities to develop more successful students and youth; 2) health care and therapeutic settings for patient recovery and improved functioning; 3) the public domain for increased civic engagement, diplomacy and peace.

That’s certainly something we can get behind! Get your pair (or get 2 and get your second for HALF OFF) on the Daily Guff: http://guffly.com/

Guffly Rocks the San Francisco Green Festival

Well it’s safe to say that the 8th Annual Green Festival in San Francisco was a hit for Guffly! We came, we exhibited, we connected, and we had a blast. This was the first big event for the Guffly team and we think we held our own and established a unique presence at the huge festival.

Guffly at Green Festival

Since Guffly is an online store, we don’t get to see the smiling faces of our lovely customers and being able to see the excitement and smiles that our products created was awesome. It seems that the Guffly perspective – living an eco-friendly lifestyle doesn’t mean you have to compromise your sense of style – is one that resonates with TONS of you! Thanks – we’re glad you like it!

Some customer favorites included:

Reusable Stainless Steel Razor Kit – men and women alike were thrilled to find an eco-friendly alternative to the disposable razor craziness! The flashy design sure makes it fun too.

Medium Seat Belt Tote – of course, we could have guessed this one based on the feedback we’ve already been getting. People are beyond impressed with the quality of craftsmanship and the functionality of this purse.

Fair Trade Shoes – we knew this but, we heard you all loud and clear: Stylish eco-friendly shoes are incredibly difficult to find! Guys and gals loved the design and humor in these shoes. We definitely are going to be scouting for more options…stay tuned!

Recycled Game Tile Tree Pendant – another online customer favorite held its own in person. These too cute pendants have eye catching designs that drew people in, then we told them to flip it over and they were surprised to find that it was a Scrabble tile!

We got a lot of “Thank Yous!” from people that were there searching for ways to be eco-friendly that felt comfortably in reach to them. There were also people living impressive green lifestyles that really enjoyed what we brought to the table. We think it’s safe to say that regardless of your “green-ness” or age there is something at Guffly for you. Plus with the availability of gift certificates (that’s right, we’re cool like that) and always $2 shipping it’s hard to beat Guffly for your eco-stylish shopping needs.

We also held a drawing ever other hour for one of our cool, eco-stylish products – the response was overwhelming. Winners are in the process of being notified and we appreciate everyone that stopped by to enter.

Something that we always want you folks to remember is we accept product suggestions anytime – just contact us. We also want to know if you are looking for a particular eco-friendly product and can’t find it…we’ll do the searching and work our hardest to find the best products for you.

Greening Your Job Tips

greening your job tipsWe all know that being eco-friendly is fun and easy but for some reason there are some people that haven’t caught on to this idea of saving the earth.  Strange, yes, but pat yourself on the back for being a more earth friendly individual.  You have decided to ride your bike whenever possible; you shop locally and use those cute reusable bags.  Not only have you done this but you also shop for eco –friendly and fair trade products!  You go you! But despite your efforts there is one place that probably hasn’t fulfilled your eco-friendly dreams and that of course is your job.  If you are an eco-minded person, listen up for some quick tips on how to green your not so green job.

1) Recycle:  You may work for a place that doesn’t recycle for whatever reason but don’t let this stop you from doing your part to save the planet.  If your place of work doesn’t recycle start a recycling committee.  As dorky as it sounds it will work!  Find a few likeminded people and organize a recycle crew.  Find a box to be used for recycling paper and each week trade off on who takes it home to be recycled with their personal recyclables.  This way you are getting rid of those unwanted papers but still being the eco diva or divo that you always knew you wanted to be. Hey, you might even make a new friend!

2) Turn off the lights: You may work in an office that always has those huge lights on all the time.  If it is at all possible turn those lights off and let the natural sunlight light up your office.  This way you are cutting back on the energy needed to power them and refreshing your mind with some good old fashion sun.  If this isn’t a possibility ask if you can turn off some of the lights.  Turning on only half of them will also cut down on energy use and still light up the office.

3) Recycled Paper:  Many offices use a lot of paper and if you want to green your job, be sure to suggest using recycled paper.  Recycled paper has the same quality as traditional paper but it is better for the environment.  If you suggest this you will be making a big stride to making your office greener.

4) Car pool:  If riding your bike to work is not an option or is becoming less of an option because of the cold weather that is approaching, suggest to car pool with people that live nearby.  Sure, this could be awkward at first if you don’t know the person that well but after a few car rides of awkward silence you will develop a relationship and an attitude for eco-friendly living.  So, be brave and find that eco-friendly person in your office and ask them to jump in for a ride!

An Interview with Guffly mascot, Soy

Soy

Name: Soy Miguel Scott

Owner: Chief Guffly Love Distributor, Chanell Scott

Birthday: May 4, 2008

Weight: 8.5 pounds

Favorite Snack: Chicken

Favorite Toy: Anything anyone else is playing with first!

Favorite Place Hang: Curled up under the covers at Chanell’s feet

Guffly Product Pick: Comfy Organic Pet Bed – it’s Soy tested and Pup approved!

Soy in a nutshell: At 1 year 5 months, Soy is the youngest (and smallest!) of the Guffly mascots. Don’t be fooled though, this little guy can hold his own and isn’t afraid to tell you about it! He likes to stay busy by patrolling the office, sitting on desks to look out the window, and finding the other dog’s toys to play with. At home, he enjoys watching TV and continuing his love/hate relationship with his grandmother. Believe it or not, this dog enjoys being rocked to sleep and willingly indulges his grandmother in this. Although Chanell is 99.9% sure Soy is a dog, we have yet to hear him bark – he attempts to speak English which comes out like a human saying meow. We’re glad to have the Soy dog with us to provide entertainment!

Fashion + Eco-Friendly = Fierce

eco friendly fashionUnless you’ve been hiding in a cave for a while you know that the it trend is to be green. Recycling, using less electricity in your home, and now buying clothing that doesn’t take a lot out of Mother Nature and still keeps you looking chic. The Spring 2010 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week definitely took a new route this year. From September 11 through the 17th, many designers showcased their work; many of whom are taking that extra effort to find earth friendly materials at a cheaper cost. Designers are starting to show that anyone can dress green no matter if you live in New York City or the North Pole. Here were some of the big green trends that were seen at fashion week and how you can get them:

  • The Throwbacks: The boyfriend blazer, the motorcycle jacket, the suit vest, and the garden party dress. The old school is always reinventing itself in the new school. The great thing about these trends is they were all in style 10-20 years ago. More than likely you still have these items in your house somewhere. So run up to that attic and shake the dust off of those boxes! If you’re too young to remember, what the ‘80s were like the nearest thrift store or second hand shop is only a hop away. Often you will find things there that still have price tags on them or have never been used.
  • The Green Shows: A first for this year, fashion week held The Green Shows: Eco Fashion Week. This event was held for two days and only showcased designers that were 100% eco-friendly. Most of these designers are underground or new, which is great because you’ll probably be the only person in your office building rocking their stuff. New things that designers are doing are recycling old fabrics and patterns from previous fashion lines. The idea of using paint is old; to dye garments many are using fruits and vegetables. Checking to make sure that the production factories are doing their best to provide a safe and healthy environment for their employees is one of the many reasons to check out these fashion lines. All of these artists are taking the extra step to make sure that the fashion they give to you is made by honest companies who are working hard to preserve the earth. So next time you think about taking a quick run to the mall, shop with these designers and others who are going green.
  • I Shop Green: So you’ve decided to shop green. Great! You wake up one morning, get ready, grab your wallet as you head out of the door; but wait! Where can you go to get green clothing that is fierce? Check out online eco-friendly retailers for fashions from around the globe. Also, not only can you shop with your friends but shop in their closets too. You might not have that animal print dress you’ve been searching for but your best friend might. Host a swapping party and bring things that you no longer want or need to trade with your friends for items they have that you want. Trade those out-of-date neon leggings for something you really want for free. It’s great for saving cash and still getting something new.

UV sunBrelli Umbrella: About the Guff

UV sunBrelli UmbrellaThe chic, supremely functional and, of course, environmentally responsibly UV sunBrelli comes to the Daily Guff from Pam & Co. They are a hip New York company that was founded by Pam Zonsius. Guffly loves that Pam is concerned with treading lightly on our planet, which drove her to invent the Brelli.

The structure of this eco-stylish umbrella is sustainable bamboo and the canopy made of a patented biodegradable material that (with the sunBrelli) provides 99% UVA/B protection. Just a reminder, UVA is the stuff that can create skin cancer and UVB are the rays that burn your skin – neither of them are a good thing!

What we mean by this umbrella biodegrading is when you’re done (and not a moment sooner) and find yourself disposing of this umbrella, it will biodegrade in 5 years (not forever like traditional umbrellas) without producing harmful gases. In fact, Pam & Co say, “That gas released by each discarded Brelli in a conditional landfill can be harvested to generate enough electricity to recoup more than 90% of the energy that was used to create it.” Brilliant. Fantastic. And oh so chic.

Thank you Pam & Co for designing what could be called the world’s most eco-friendly umbrella! The UVA/B protection is really the icing on the cake. Protect yourself from not only the rainy season but also the sun’s harmful rays by getting your sunBrelli on the Daily Guff: http://www.guffly.com/
